Pewter Class

Sometimes it is nice to teach in a students home, they can clean up the mess for a change. Talking on the phone is not part of the course and costs extra.

Altered Brush

There is a challenge going on at the moment to make a brush that speaks of what we do. Since I do quite a few things, I thought I would start with this one to promote my Pewter classes which are held at Herbert Evans in Fourways Johannesburg. If you would like to come and join in a class please contact me at carylw3@mweb.co.za.

Asian Pewter Designs

What I call Asian Pewter, doesn't have the high relief like the more elegant western pewter work would have, it is more about the textures, design and the engraving. The Asian workshop teaches you about all the pattern tools, Eastern design and learning different textures. This is a beginners class.
This art piece is part of a set. The pattern was given to me by one of my students so PLEASE DO NOT try to download it and copy it.

Samples of my work

Making faces in pewter requires a little bit more patience and understanding of how pewter actually works to get things in proportion as far as what protrudes out and what doesn't. Advanced Class
Sometimes we find an object that is begging for pewter work, this cross was one of them. Then what do you do if you haven't got a pattern.... you ask me to make one for you!
This is very simple a child could do it, but the end result is quite cute. A little tin for bits and bobs.
This box was made by one of my students as a Christmas present for someone special. I thought the end result was amazing considreing she has only been doing pewter for a few months.
Sample box canvases that I have placed above my kitchen sink rather than the boot of my car. I say if it can stand still... put pewter on it.
Tissue box made for a Christmas order. The lady who ordered this one bought several of them as gifts for her clients.

Pewter in colour and mosaic

Pewter can also look really pretty with colour. This was a little angel that I made for the Seedpod where I do classes. She sold quite quickly and I didn't get a chance to take a photo so I have nicked this one from The Seedpod on Face Book, please go and have a look at all the other beautiful things they make there.
This is not an easy project to do one at least needs to have done some pewter and you really need to have the hang of high relief. I certainly wouldn't attempt this as a beginner, it would be an advanced class. The pewter is stuck on to a wooden cut out, so tucking all the edges in is that hard part.

Minnie Frames

These little pictures make a lovely inexpensive gift for Birthdays, wedding presents etc. They can be ordered as a single picture or in a set of 2,3 or 4. The price will depend on quantity.

Happy Hippies

One thing I am going to have to do is take better photo's if anyone is going to want to see the detail in the work, but let me get the blog up and running in the meantime.
These happy little couple came from Mimmic who have amazing pewter supplies and I get most of my things from them unless I create something of my own. They are busy moving their offices and they are having problems getting wooden items to work on so until they have that sorted I am going to be doing a lot of my own objects to work on.

Passion for Pewter

I have noticed over the past few years that Pewter appears to be a lot more popular in South Africa compared to other parts of the world.  I want to use this blog for video tutorials and a place where if you do pewter and you need some help or want to know how to do something, you will be able to ask and I will do my best to help.

In the meantime this blog will be under contruction, so please be patient.
